What is Earth Sciences?

Updates
See our society recent updates!

As well as continuing in their traditional role, Earth Scientists today are attempting to understand how the Earth System - rock, water, atmosphere and life- works, albeit at time scales beyond human experience. An understanding of complex geological interactions between components of the system provides a background to many issues that are of concern to humanity, such as sustainable development, urbanization, global warming, water pollution and natural disaster mitigation. In the Earth System, human impact is not inconsequential, but only geology gives us a long enough record to recognize the natural variability of the system.

Field Course

Apart from learning from the textbook or classrooms, DES students often go on field trips to have an all rounded and holistic learning experience. Reflections from many students and alumni firmly believe that they learn best by using all our five senses to understand the complexities of the Earth.

In addition, they think that the sense of friendship is usually bonded through working hard and playing hard in field works and off-times.

DES students have visited some geologically interesting places locally such as Lai Chi Chong, Port Island, Tung Ping Chau and East Dam and internationally such as China, Australia, Cyprus, and the US.

Why Study Earth Sciences in HKU?...

Internship

DES students have the opportunity to obtain some valuable skills though work experience in related fields. They fondly believe it is important to apply knowledge in real life situations and to adapt to outside working environment in order to have a smooth transition after university life. DES students will usually enter into fields such as research, engineering, mining and environmental firms to assist in tackling real life problems.

Specifically, intern has done works such as corebox analysis, land and ocean sampling and surveying, rock and mineral analysis and lots more.

Career Propsects

70% of our Graduates over 7 year period (1996-2003) directly got jobs in Earth Sciences. Most geologcial jobs are engineering, government and environmental. Over 95% of geological jobs obtained by our graduates are in HK. Many jobs are in Engineering --- Contracting & Consulting, Cilvil Service, Materials Supply and Testing, Geological Information Systems, Gemology, Geophysics Consultants, Environmental Consulting, Academic and Applied Research.

In Earth Sciences we study the nature and evolution of our planet. Geoscientists use their knowledge to increase our understanding of Earth processes and to discover resources which improve the quality of human life. However, the focus of Earth Sciences is still the rocks, whether they are found on the deep ocean floor, or on the highest mountain peaks. This means that field work is a major part of our activities. In the field we make observations, explore the subsurface using geophysics and drilling, collect samples and take measurements that will be analyzed in the laboratory. Today, leading Earth Science institutions have as complex an infrastructure as any in Chemistry, Physics, or Biotechnology, and indeed utilize the same research philosophy and research techniques.
